Getting your cannabis edibles dosage right is the single most important step for a good experience with gummies, brownies or cookies. Edibles work differently from flower or vapes. They take longer to kick in, and they can feel stronger than you expect. This guide explains how edible dosing works, how much to start with, and how long to wait before you take more.

The timing is also useful. On October 5, 2026, Ohio’s new cannabis rules took effect, and they include clear limits on THC per edible serving. In addition, Halloween is around the corner, so it is a good moment to talk about safe storage at home.

What Does a Cannabis Edibles Dosage Mean?

A dose is the amount of THC you take in one sitting. Edible labels list THC in milligrams (mg). So a gummy marked “5 mg” contains 5 milligrams of THC.

Most legal markets treat 10 mg of THC as one standard serving. For example, New Mexico’s health department describes a standard serving as no more than 10 mg. However, one serving is not the same as the right dose for you. Your tolerance, body and recent meals all change how a serving feels.

Why the label matters

Always check two numbers on the package:

THC per piece or serving. This is the number you dose by.

Total THC per package. A whole brownie or bar can hold several servings.

For instance, a 100 mg chocolate bar might contain ten 10 mg squares. Eating the whole bar at once would mean ten servings, not one.

Cannabis Edibles Dosage for Beginners: How Much to Take

If you are new to edibles, start small. New Mexico’s health department suggests that first-time users begin with 2.5 to 5 mg of THC. That is a quarter or half of a standard serving.

Here is a simple way to think about common amounts:

2.5 mg: a common microdose and a cautious first try.

5 mg: a typical starting point for many new adult consumers.

10 mg: one standard serving, often better suited to people with some experience.

Above 10 mg: usually only for experienced users who already know how edibles affect them.

These ranges are general guidance, not personal advice. Everyone reacts differently, so your own experience should guide your next step.

How Long Do Edibles Take to Kick In?

This is where most people get into trouble. According to New Mexico’s health department, edibles can take 30 minutes to 2 hours to start working. The full effect can take up to 4 hours to arrive.

Many first-timers feel nothing after 45 minutes and take a second piece. Then both doses hit at once. As a result, the experience becomes far stronger than planned.

Why edibles feel different from smoking

When you smoke or vape, THC enters your blood through your lungs within minutes. With an edible, THC travels through your digestive system first. Your body then breaks much of it down into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC, which is also psychoactive. According to fact sheets from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, oral THC also produces lower and more delayed peak levels. In short, the effects arrive later and can last longer.

Cannabis Edibles Dosage Tips: Start Low and Go Slow

“Start low and go slow” is the most common advice in cannabis safety, and for good reason. Follow these steps for your first session:

Pick a low dose. Choose 2.5 to 5 mg, or cut a larger piece into smaller portions.

Eat a light snack first. Many people find the experience more predictable this way.

Wait at least 2 hours. Do not take more until you know how the first dose feels.

Write it down. Note the product, the amount and how you felt. This helps you adjust next time.

Increase slowly. If you want a stronger effect next time, raise the dose by a small step, such as 2.5 mg.

Also, avoid mixing edibles with alcohol or other substances. Public health guidance recommends using one substance at a time. Choose a calm setting and, ideally, enjoy edibles with people you trust.

Plan around the long duration

Edibles last much longer than a joint. New Mexico’s health department advises waiting 6 to 8 hours after an edible before driving, swimming or other higher-risk activities, and possibly longer. Never drive after using cannabis. Plan to stay home or arrange a ride.

What Ohio’s New Rules Say About Edible Servings

Ohio’s Division of Cannabis Control adopted new product rules that took effect on October 5, 2026. For adult-use edibles, the rules cap each portion at 10 mg of THC and each package at 100 mg. Medical products have separate, higher limits. The rules also set package limits for flower and vapes.

Ohio is not alone. Many legal states use a similar 10 mg serving standard. So, whatever state you live in, the 10 mg serving makes a useful reference point for your cannabis edibles dosage when you read a label. Always check your own state’s current rules, because laws differ and change often.

Store Edibles Safely, Especially Around Halloween

Many edibles look like ordinary treats. That makes safe storage essential, and even more so in late October when candy is everywhere at home.

The numbers show why. A study published in the journal Pediatrics found that reported cases of young children eating cannabis edibles rose from about 200 in 2017 to 3,054 in 2021. That is an increase of 1,375%. Most children found the edibles in their own homes.

Keep your household safe with these habits:

Keep edibles in their original, labeled packaging.

Store them in a locked box or high cabinet, away from snacks and candy.

Never mix edibles into a bowl of Halloween treats.

Keep them away from pets as well.

If a child or pet eats an edible, contact a doctor, a vet or Poison Control (1-800-222-1222) right away.

Choosing the Right Edible for Your Cannabis Edibles Dosage

Some edibles are easier to dose than others. Small, pre-portioned items let you control your intake. Larger baked goods often need cutting into pieces.

Bite-sized treats such as the Mint Chip Brownie Bite make portions simple.

Larger baked goods such as the Merciful Brownie can be split into smaller pieces for a lower dose.

Prefer to skip THC? Browse our CBD products instead.

You can explore the full range in our edibles collection. Check each product’s label for THC per serving before you buy.

The Bottom Line

A smart cannabis edibles dosage comes down to three habits. Start with 2.5 to 5 mg, wait at least two hours before taking more, and store every edible safely. Ohio’s new 10 mg serving cap is a useful reminder that one serving is a small amount, and that is a good thing. Take your time, learn how your body responds, and enjoy edibles responsibly. Our products are for adults 21 and over only, where cannabis is legal.
